Fundamental problems facing Astronomy in the "Big Data" era relate to processing, visualisation, analysis, storage, and transfer of data. As the volume and velocity at which data is generated and stored increases, there is a need for new approaches to turn the data flood into a flood of insights, ideas and new theories. Novel methods and analytical tools are required to help astronomers understand the information hidden within their data. Through my thesis, I investigate and introduce novel tools and methods related to visualisation and analysis, data storage and data transfer of large survey data-all of which are developed to enable large and heterogeneous collaborations and surveys.
